LET IT SNOW!

Happy New Year! This week, we are making a book called, "Let it Snow!" The book will include types of writing that we have learned about:

Snowetry ( concrete poetry,Today we wrote "snowetry". We made snowglobes using Word - insert-shapes, on the computer;simply a circle on a trapezoid base. Each student made 4 identical globes inserting the letters SNOW, one letter per globe and then added descriptive words about snow starting with each of the letters of the word snow. For example; S- slippery, soft, N- nipping at my nose, O- outside having fun, W- Winter wonderland.
factual writing- Snowflake facts, We researched interesting facts about snowflakes and even looked at pictures of the largest snowman. These facts were written on lined paper and matted on black paper. On the blank side of the black paper, we drew snow pictures using white crayon and silver markers.
We also made a snowman glyph. I gave each child a blank snowman and read instructions as to how to complete the snowman. For ex. If you have ever made a snowfort, make a red and green hat, If you are a girl put a feather in the hat, a boy- a ball on the hat, etc.

personal narratives- Playing in the Snow These were great. Every child had a snow story, from seeing a fox in their backyard to a family snowball fight! The visual that inspired us was a picture of each child dressed in snowgear. I scanned a drawing of a snow coat, mittens , scarf and boots and inserted a photo of each child's head. Each child cut their snow person out and glued it onto a wintery wonderland background.

writing directions- How to Make a Snowman-By dividing a piece of white drawing paper into squares, we wrote and illustrated like a cartoon, teh steps in building a snowman.


writing a recipe- Snowman Soup- The students write a poem and a recipe. They each also make a bag with the ingredients for Snowman Soup. The poem and recipe can be found on several websites..

Each day this week, I will show examples of each page of the book. Today, we made the cover. I find that if we make the cover first, it engages the children to want to make the rest of the book.












Our covers were snowglobes. I cut circles out of a piece of tagboard and laminated the pieces of tagboard with the clear circle. A base was added with colored paper. The children decorated the snowglobes by using stickers, paper, ribbon etc on a piece of white paper that is the first page of the book and becomes the title page.

Last page- Each child wrote Psalm 139:14. on a piece of writing paper. The writing was glued onto a black background. Then,. each child wrote words that described their uniqueness on white paper. The white paper was then cut into a snowflake and glued on the background.
