There are so many spin offs of the original song,"There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly...' I thought why not have my class do their own spin off? Each child made an old lady using a template that I made. The lady was glued onto a 12x18 piece of white drawing paper. The students added wrinkles, granny glasses, etc. The book pages were actually attached to her skirt on paper cut the same shape as the skirt. The cover was made of patterned paper. The pages were attached by stapling to the skirt part of the old lady.
To make the content of the book, each child cut out 5 food pictures from grocery ads that they could rhyme. The food pictures were glued on the page with the text. For example: a picture of a can of corn- There was an old lady who swallowed some corn, it was early in the morn, when she swallowed a can of corn, or There was an old lady who swallowed a steak, what a mistake to swallow a steak, or There was an old lady who swallowed a muffin, a muffin that was to be put into stuffin" etc. This was a great way to practice and apply rhyming verse and to purposefully write as entertainment.
