After reading Lois Ehlert's."Nuts to You", and Brian Wildsmith's,"Squirrels," my class was ready to make a book.
The cover was made in the style of Lois Ehlert. We took brown construction paper and crayons outside and made bark rubbings. A circle was then cut out of the bark rubbed paper. The page following was another piece of brown paper with a black circle that fit underneath the cut out. A squirrel was drawn and glued onto the black circle.
The content was a poem. The students had to generate a list of words that describe a squirrel using an ing ending. For example: chattering in the treetops, gathering nuts for the Winter, scurrying through the forest. Each of these pages were illustrated. A squirrel fact sheet was included in the book.
